The Bandana Dress

What do you get when you have 2 bandanna's and new shirring skills?
Another really cute easy dress!

There's one hem, and one simple measurements to take.  Just 2 bandana sewn together and shirred at the top.  This is more like a quick how to, than a tutorial.  Working with bandanas takes a lot of "eyeballing it".

Materials:
2 bandanas
sewing machine
elastic thread
ribbon (for straps)

Measure your subject around the chest.  Divide in half.  Add 7 inches.
My little girls measurements were 22 inches. (she's about a 3T) So I need each piece to be 18 inches wide.

That turned out roughly to the edge of the printed border give or take a 1/4 inch on each side, so I made the decision to sew the side seams on that border.  Since we are shirring, you can give or take a little.  Use your instinct on where to sew up your side seams.

Turn your bandannas so that right sides are touching.  Most bandannas have a "made in china" stamp.  Make sure that this writing is at the top of your dress. Sew up the seams.  Then I cut the excess of with pinking shears and pressed out the seam.

Fold over the top so your "made in china" stamp will be on the inside of the dress. Stitch it.
There's no need to hem the dress at the bottom, unless you want it shorter.  It's all about personal preference.

I shirred 12 lines 1/2 inch apart on the top of the dress.  If you don't know about shirring yet, you can check out this post.

I love halters because they are so easy and they look good too.  I sewed on double sided satin ribbons to the front.

FYI: Wal Mart has the best bandanas EVER.  They are made of a SOFT cotton that seems to have a pretty decent thread count.  They also have a huge selection of different colors and patterns. Oh, and they are $1.

That is adorable! I can't wait to make one, but I have to practice my shirring first. Where in Walmart do you find the bandanas?

Nicole @ Create and Delegate

Rachel- you can find the bandannas near the hats and scarves! In my walmart, that's behind the jewelry and next to the underwear.

I just made one of these two, except I skipped out on the halter top. I just recently taught myself shirring. Yours came out beautifully!! :-)

That is adorable! I stumbled across your blog from sew mama sew... and as a former resident of Frederick, it brought smiles to my face to see the beautiful home you have! (the historical district was just my favorite place to go to!) Beautiful girl and beautiful job on your sewing! Love it.

ooh! I LOVE this!
I wonder if I can get the bandannas to fit my daughters in size 6 and 7s... they would make cute shirts if the width is right! Fingers crossed!!!!

Yea yea yea!!! I just finished mine and it is too cute. I had a few mishaps, but all in all - perfecto! Hopefully it fits (she's asleep). We'll find out in the morning!

Kate

oh and I did NOT enjoy the bias of the bandanas. I got mine from Wal-mart but they were in a package (2/$1). and come to think of it, I've never found a bandanna that wasn't crooked. How are YOURS?! It was a little strategy and a lot of luck that I got my seams to line up. I just pinned one side then sewed, then pinned the other. But if you lay them on top of each other and try to match it up, won't work. Just a note!

Lisa

How did you turn it into a halter though?

These are adorable! I would like to make one for my 7yo, who is petite but a bandana would be too small. Any suggestions what dimensions I would cut material to make this dress?

threepitas

Do you sell these bandana dresses? If so I would love to buy one for my 3 yo. Please let me know. Thanks!
